About Kerala

Palm = Coconut means...... Kerala

Unlike Goa, Kerala is a traditional state with its own deep culture and stunning natural tropical beauty. The State is divided into three regions - the coastal lowlands, the fertile midlands and the highlands. The lowland of Kerala is a coastal belt relatively flat and is networked by endless backwaters. The midland is made up of undulating hills and valleys. This area is rich with cashew, coconut, tapioca, banana, rice, ginger, pepper, sugarcane and vegetable plantations. The forested highlands slope down from western ghats which rise to an average height of 900 meter with a number of peaks over 1500 meter in height. This is an area abound in tea, coffee, rubber and spice plantations and wildlife reserves. Like Goa, tourism to this state is on the rise as the word spreads of its unique quality and intriguing way of life. The sun-soaked beaches and the calm flowing backwaters are some of Kerala's most alluring attractions.

Vasco Da Gama's arrival was just the culmination of the western world's rush to find the sea route to the Indies and its spices trade. Being the original land of spice, the food here is varied between Hindu, Muslim and Christian cultures. It’s a heaven for vegetarians with dishes like veg thali (an array of mixed veg and lentil dishes) served on the banana leaf costing equivalent to a bottle of coke here. Not only is it good value but indeed very tasty and satisfying.

Kerala is a blend of Dravidian and Aryan culture. The incongruent mixture of colour, costume, cadences, tunes and words often take the audience out of this world. Theyyam, Kathakali, Ottanthullal, Koodiyattam, Chakiarkoothu, Pathakam, Chavittunatakam are important art forms of Kerala. All these primordial performances involve exotic costumes and strange settings and patterns dealing with the subjects of great epics.
